Hello folks !

I wonder how it goes from latest information message. My wish was to send this letter via the newsletter, but an important trouble to the infrastructure let me think it'll not be possible.

In this message, DoL's way of life, and incoming changes.

summer incoming, and if we want to avoid being burn by the sun, the best is to code on DoL
more seriously, some new shards are coming on the Portal, and we notice some features-for-pay options. My position is extremly clear about this: this will not be tolerated on the Portal.
The DoL line is not here to make money. Most of us use a copyrighted client, the game mechanisms are often not really original, and the straight line is represented by the will of keeping DoL in the hobby and fun sphere.
It means donations are tolerated, but pay for play or any similar feature (pay for stuff, pay for VIP) are not wanted.

(Incoming changes)
the web site is now fully operationnal. We plan to brought exciting features, related to Dawn of Light of course, such as nightly server builds or model databases, but also for Storm, with new game & website integration.
a lot of upgrade are here: bug tracker include patch wanted, [ code] tag support the syntax coloration, etc... Thanks Etaew for taking care of us.
a DoL setup release 'll rise in the summer. Including the released stuff and corrected stuff from the public database, this is a quick server setup allowing you to play in lan with friends.
Concerning the code, we please you to not forget to contribute to Dawn of Light, as it lives with your blood !

Did i mention the new server our host Stinger, from Storm Networks -http://stormnet.gotdns.com/ - provide to us ? many clap to him
Concerning game, ToA is open on Storm, and livelike Artefacts are beginning to be filled. You can grab some, and experience the strict live like compliance - a well know game mechanism. You can all /bow Aredhel - for this and for more - !
A new game instancing system (PvE,PvP) was implemented by Dinberg. Another very interesting feature, in the line of what Dinberg does !
Housing, new scrolls... Etaew got a look on this, and this is really good. God, this guy have a falcon eye (nothing related to archery) !


Of course, i think to all developpers and contributers, with more or less visible stuff (standardmobbrain, serverproperties, necros, propertycalc...), and i 'd like to cheer 'em all ! Merci Tolakram, Dunnerholl, Nidel, Daeli.... and all thoses making this project more and more interesting, from Server team (/kiss them) to Support team (/hug them) - including Batlas !

I like the part about 'pay-for-play or pay for features' area. But, what exactly are you going to do to these shards? Many shards won't stop their VIP system because of a letter on the DoL forum (lets be honest, 3/4 of the servers that have VIP features are unsupporting and don't even look at DoL's website). Is any action going to be done? A DAoC portal account suspension?

I think you can imagine how we are in touch with the DoL infrastructure and the means we can deploy

Very Good, but late. Ariadolis went down about a year ago and at that time the admin had already made thousands of € profit of it. Also all or almost all larger shards after that offered something in reward for cash, be it i50 or eden, vip systems and similiar thing became common a long time ago. I do not like that and would love to see that stoped, but have to admit, a quality server costs money and if people dont get something usable in reward they will not spend any cash if they dont have to, donations dont work out.
This should be thought through and discussed, it is sad to see good shards go down cause of money issues.

Sad, perhaps, but if they can't get folks to donate ...

Accepting money for playing the game has legal ramifications as well. Mythic might be ok ignoring us if we're free, but a pay to play server ... I think they might take interest in that.

I don't contribute so other people can make money. If they want to write their own server code they can do whatever they want and take their own chances with Mythic.

no, it is not a discussion, it is a point of view that is to admit.

Donations can largely keep the server alive, Uthgard is the living proof.
Eden & Genesis does not go back because of donations.

I absolutely love the attitude towards servers charging, but one thing I was curious to hear more about is Dinberg's instancing system.

Hello im just wondering when you will start to enforce the new features-for-pay rule.
Becouse i still see servers using it on the portal.
